Which Nikon Lens?

Nikon DX Lenses
Nikon DX lenses are designed specifically with digital SLR photography in mind. All of the lenses in the Nikon DX range are designed to work perfectly with the standard digital image sensor format of 24 x 16mm, which is roughly 2/3 of the dimensions used in standard 135mm wet film. The DX range represented something of a first for Nikon in that the range includes all sorts of different styles of lenses that can be used for various jobs, including both telephoto and fisheye lenses.

Nikon Micro Lenses
Nikon Micro lenses are actually designed for macro photography, however Nikon have adopted the "Micro" name to help describe the function of these lenses better. As the name suggests Nikon Micro lenses are suitable for shooting extreme close-ups of subjects and objects, macro (or Nikon micro) lenses are unique in that they offer a 1:2 or 1:1 viewing ratio, that is to say the item appears on film 1/2 or exactly the same size as it does in real life. This allows for shooting close up images that feature a stunningly high level of detail.

Nikon Normal Lenses
The Normal lenses are standard Nikon lenses as one might imagine a camera lens in the traditional sense. They still come packed full of the latest technological wizardry such as autofocusing, extra-low dispersion glass elements, and use of a nano crystal coating. The fixed nature of Nikon Normal lenses make them ideal for portrait photography, and any other application in a controlled environment where it is easy to simply move closer to and further away from your subject to adjust the composition of your image.

Nikon Normal Zoom
Nikon Normal lenses are something of a workhorse lens for many photographers, and with this range Nikon have simply added a zoom function to give the lenses a slightly broader use of applications. Nikon Normal Zoom lenses are what you might imagine as a "standard" zoom lens, but as with the "normal" range do not be fooled by the name as the lenses in this range still feature a host of technological innovations the same as any other lens from Nikon.

Nikon Perspective Control

The Nikon Perspective Control range is newly released (as of 2008) and these lenses are somewhat radical in their departure from traditional lens design. Nikon perspective control lenses come complete with a unique tilt and shift function; the lens itself can shift plus and minus 11.5mm and tilt plus and minus 8.5mm allowing you a previously unimaginable amount of control of the composition of your images. All of the Nikon Perspective Control lenses feature
a preview button with an electronic aperture control.

Nikon Teleconverters

Nikon teleconverters are simple in their design and function yet crafted to the high quality you have come to expect from Nikon. Teleconverters are a unique type of lens that are mounted directly between the camera and the regular lens and enlarge the focal point of the image by a set amount, in the case of Nikon by either 1.4, 1.7 or 2.0 times magnification depending on which teleconveter you are using. When using Nikon teleconveters
by increasing your focal length you also increase the intensity of the light that reaches the film or photo-sensor which allows for shooting at much higher resolutions.

Nikon Telephoto Lenses
Nikon Telephoto lenses work to bring the subject you are focusing on closer to you, making them vital for photographing things that you cannot get physically close to. All telephoto lenses require a very steady hand (or a tripod) as shaking will be amplified when shooting using a telephoto lens. Most Nikon telephoto lenses feature the usual technological innovations to help you produce sharp images but you should always bear in mind that when you are shooting with a telephoto lens any imperfections in the lens or your camera equipment, or even in the air between you and the subject will affect the quality of your image far more than when shooting with a standard lens.

Nikon Telephoto Zoom
Nikon Telephoto Zoom lenses are standard telephoto lenses that feature the addition of a variable zoom function, giving the lens more utility. Modern advances in technology have enabled manufacturers such as Nikon to add zoom functions to other lenses that previously featured a fixed focal length can now be altered using a zoom function to bring a subject closer to help you to compose the perfect photograph. As with a standard telephoto lens it is vital that you use a tripod or some other form of stabilisation, even if you are only resting your camera on something.

Nikon Wideangle Lenses

Nikon Wideangle lenses are used to take photographs of large scenes or spanning views where a normal lens would simply not suffice. Wideangle lenses have a large number of uses, from taking stunning scenery photographs through to work in confined spaces such as photographing inside buildings as the wider angle of the lens will allow you to capture more of what you see on film (or on your flash card). Wideangle lenses are excellent for portraying a sense of space through your images.

Nikon Wideangle Zoom

As you might expect Nikon Wideangle Zoom lenses are standard wideangle lenses with the addition of a zoom function. As has been previously discussed
modern advances in technology have allowed camera and lens manufacturers such as Nikon to add zoom functions to lenses that previously featured a fixed focal length, allowing you to bring a subject closer to help you to compose the perfect photograph. The addition of a zoom function simply gives you more flexibility on how you will use a lens, especially if you are in a situation where you cannot move to compose your images.
